【Silver Award Winner at Japan's Largest Commercial Design Award】 Dear Ginza Building Project
Published in Germany architecture magazine "Architektur" and
Netherlands architecture magazine "MARK"
This time I will talk about when I designed a commercial building in Ginza 1-chome Japan.
The construction site is located in Ginza 3-chome, Tokyo, one back street from Ginza Chuo-dori called Gasto-dori.
Unlike the gorgeous atmosphere of Chuo-dori, it has a quiet atmosphere that is often found behind large buildings.
It was as expected.
The challenge was how to lead as many people as possible to these back roads.
In discussions with business owners, we decided that we should aim to change the atmosphere of this street itself by making the building facade (the exterior of the building seen from the front) more gorgeous, and so the building design began.
Since the only view from inside the building was the nihilistic backside of a large building, we wanted to create a design that would be beautiful and enjoyable for the building's tenants, rather than just a simple glass curtain wall.
Therefore, in addition to the glass curtain wall, we created a double-skin structure with the appearance of perforated aluminum metal, making the facade an interior design and creating a facade that would have an impact from the street.
I wanted to create a look that was both impactful and delicate, so I discussed the details with the craftsmen and the structural designer, and created a full-scale prototype while deciding on the details.
The process of deciding on a design that has never been done before is exciting for everyone, which is the real pleasure of manufacturing.
It took about three years to design this building, and the hard work was worth it, winning the Silver Award at Japan's largest commercial design award, as well as being featured in media from various countries around the world (*German architecture magazine "Architektur", Netherlands). It has been featured in architectural magazines such as ``MARK'' and has been a commercial success, with tenants always fully booked.
I will continue to share my experience so that it can help as many people as possible with their renovations.
